French Classes in Cois Abhann

FRENCH  CLASSES

When is the ideal time to start learning a foreign language?  The younger, the better, simply because “young children are still developing their own language by copying the words and mimicking the accents they hear around them”.

I believe that learning a language should be an enjoyable experience, therefore the French Course is designed to help children enjoy the French language while acquiring the useful skills that they will use later on.

Course Description

The French Course addressed to Junior and Senior Infants will focus on developing listening and speaking language skills, using teaching methods appropriate for the 5-6 age group. We shall use “First Fun with French” book and its accompanying DVD from Usborne. In addition, children will be given worksheets and they will participate in games and role-play activities aimed at stimulating them to speak French in a natural way. At this stage, there is no need for parents to buy any books.

The French Course addressed to Primary School Children (1st to 6th grade) will focus on developing mainly the listening and speaking language skills, but also reading and writing skills, all in a gradual manner. We shall use “French Club Book 1” course book, which is accompanied by a CD containing songs and rhymes performed by French children. It is highly advisable for children to have their own course book. There will be a variety of activities from real life situation dialogues to singing and playing, all combined with reading and writing tasks, appropriate for the children's age.

Course Organisation

The French Classes will be held once a week, every Wednesday, from 2:10 pm to 3:05 pm. for Junior-Senior Infants and 3:10 pm. to 4:05 pm. for Primary School Children (1st to 6th class) in the Meeting Room of the Cois Abhann centre in Inistioge. As a rule, I will pick up the Junior-Senior Infants from school, at 2:05 pm. and walk them to Cois Abhann.  Their parents will be expected to pick them up from Cois Abhann at 3:10 pm. The Primary School Children (1st to 6th class) will come by themselves or accompanied by their parents to Cois Abhann at 3:05 pm. and will be picked up by their parents from Cois Abhann at 4:10 pm.

The duration of the French Course extends from February to end of June, with flexibility during school holiday or school breaks.

At the moment, there are only 2 groups put in place: Primary School Children Group (1st to 6th class) and Junior-Senior Group. Ideally, it would be better to have 3 groups: one for Junior-Senior Infants, one for 1st to 3rd class and a third one for 4th to 6th.  Those interested, please text name of child, class and contact details to tel. no. 0834454119.

The course will start on February 5th. We hope to have 8 children in a group by then. In the eventuality that nobody else will join by the end of February, there will be a reduced rate of 6 euros/child for the whole month, then, from March onwards it will have to go up to 8 euros/child for small groups (as presented in the leaflet).

Laura Meikle – Professional Background

As a University Graduate Linguist, specializing in English and French, I acquired the theoretical knowledge necessary when working with different languages. This linguistic knowledge, combined with the pedagogical studies focused on primary school children resulted in a strong foundation for teaching foreign languages. Furthermore, the 10 years spent as a fully qualified teacher provided hands-on experience in working with children (aged 6-11) and teenagers.
