Inistioge Tidy Towns
TIDY TOWNS 2014
Its that time of year again, the days are getting longer and warmer and we are preparing to put in place our plans for presenting Inistioge at it's very best for all our residents and our many visitors.
This year we celebrate our 50th year of involvement in the Tidy Towns competition and we have shown considerable improvement over the years.
In the coming year we intend to make a great effort to pull out all the stops.
To help us achieve our goals we need more volunteers as well as welcoming back the members who have supported our efforts in recent years. We are adopting a flexible approach completing the various tasks allowing people to work at their own timeframes.
Everyone is welcome to attend a meeting next Thursday 10th April at 8pm in Cois Abhann where our plans for 2014 will be presented. New members most welcome.
Frank Sullivan
Chairman
Inistioge Tidy Towns Committee
PS If anyone is unable to attend next Thursday's meeting but wishes to help out in any way, please contact me at 086 881 0543
Many thanks

We’ve been busy!

Work completed to date in June 2012- June 2013 (below)
Built environment:
Capping of walls and new piers at Old Town house adjacent to River Park
Cleaning and painting seating on River Park, and cleaned all signage in village
Repair of old boundary wall between field and river Park area continued, and a new area for planting and seating here was formed.
New fence erected at southern end of River Park, planting of native hedge in this area has been postponed due to inclement weather, but we hope to have it planted by the end of May.
The Boat Slip area on L82831, has been cleaned, and new timber fencing erected. New seating and picnic area, paving and the planting of a native hedge are all planned for this area. However, this is the one location in Inistioge that is subject to on-going vandalism. We are liaising with local Garda and Area Engineer in our efforts to seek a solution.
St Columcille’s Holy Well is carefully maintained by the Hatchery Lane residents and the local FAS workers. To enhance the wider area near the Well, the gardens adjacent to the Mill Stream on Hatchery Lane have been cleared of rubbish and overgrowth and re-planted with perennials.

Wildlife and natural amenities
We undertook a survey of river birds between 1st – 15th May in conjunction with Bird Watch Ireland. The survey undertaken by TT volunteers and local bird enthusiasts (approx. 30 observation hours in total) confirmed the area as habitat for grey herons, swans, sandmartins, dippers, kingfishers, cormorants, water hens, mallard, grey wagtails and little egrets. A breeding colony of grey heron in the Woodstock Woods has been confirmed as well as nesting sandmartins and dippers. Results have been returned to Bird Watch Ireland on-line survey.
A beautiful show of cowslips beside the Picnic Area on Poyntz Road this spring.
The area has begun to naturally re-green following development.
Waste Prevention
We have distributed the publication ‘Less Food Waste More Profit’ by the EPA to all the local cafes and businesses that serve food.
We print a different ‘Top Tip’ to reduce waste in the home on the Inistioge website on a monthly basis.
Rather than use treated water, we use the river for watering.
In Inistioge TT secretarial duties are varied!

Result! Following representation over a long period and meetings with our local Council Representative and Area Engineer, Kilkenny County Council laid Tarmacadam some weeks ago on the streets to two sides of The Square, and to the street parallel to the lower Square. Enjoy!
